Schooling and Education

It is commonly believed in United States that school is where people go to get an education.Nevertheless,it has been said that today children interrupt their education to go to school.The distinction between schooling and education implied by this remark is important.
Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooling. Education knows no bounds.It can take place anywhere,whether in the shower or in the job ,whether in a kitchen or on a tractor. It includes both the formal learning that takes place in schools and the whole universe of informal learning. The agents of education can range from a revered grandparent to the people debating politics on the radio,from to a child to a distinguished scientist.Whereas schooling has a certain predictability ,education quite often produces surprises . A chance conversation with a stranger may lead a person to discover how little is known of other religions.People are engaged in education from infancy on. Education ,then ,is a very broad, inclusive term.It is a lifelong process, a process that stars long before the star of school and one that should be an integral part of one's entire life.
Schooling,on the other hand,is a specific,formalized process,whose general pattern varies little from one setting to the next.Throughout a country ,children arrive at school at approximately the same time, take assigned seats ,are taught by an aduit,use similar textbooks ,do homework, taks exams ,and so on. The slices of reality that are to be learned ,whether they are the alphabet or an understanding of the working of government ,have usually been limited by the boundaries of the subject being taught. For example, hign school students know that there not likely to find out in their classes the truth about political problems in their communities or what the newest filmmakers are experimenting with.There are definite conditions surrounding the formalized process or schooling.



学校教育与社会教育

在美国,人们通常认为上学是为了受教育。而现在却有人认为孩子们上学打断了他们去学校受教育的过程。这种观念中上学与受教育之间的区别非常重要。
与上学相比,教育更具开放性、内容更广泛。教育不受任何限制。它可以在任何场合下进行,在淋浴时、在工作中、在厨房里或拖拉机上。它既包括在学校所受的正规教育,也包括一切非正规教育。传授知识的人可以是从德高望重的老者到收音机里进行政治辩论的人们,可以是从小孩子到知名的科学家。反之上学读书是有一定可预见性,而教育往往能带来意外的发现。与陌生人的一次随意谈话可能会使人认识到自己对其它宗教其实所知甚少。人们从幼时起就开始受教育。因此,教育是一个内涵很丰富的词,它自始至终伴随人的一生,早在人们上学之前就开始了。教育应成为人生命中不可缺少的一部分。
然而,上学却是一个特定的形式化了的过程。在不同场合下,它的基本形式大同小异。在全国各地,孩子们几乎在同一时刻到达学校,坐在指定的座位上,由一位成年人传授知识,使用大致相同的教材,做作业,考试等等。他们所学的现实生活中的一些片断,如字母表或政府的运作,往往受到学科范围的限制。例如,高中生在课堂上通过沟通没法弄清楚政治问题的真相,也不会了解到最新潮的电影制片人在做哪些尝试。学校教育形式化的过程是有局限性的。

Time is grain for peasants.

Time is wealth for workers.

Time is life for doctors.

Time is knowledge for students.

Time is speed for scientists.

Time is money for enterprisers.

Time is everything for all of us.

对农民而言,时间是谷物。

对工人而言,时间是财富。

对医生而言,时间是生命。

对学生而言,时间是知识。

对科学家而言,时间是速度。

对企业家而言,时间是金钱。

对我们大家而言,时间就是一切。

An architect knows that if he builds with care,

his structure may stands for centuries.

A teacher knows that

if he builds with love and truth,

what he builds will last forever.

建筑师知道,

如果他尽心,

他的建筑物会屹立几个世纪。

老师知道,

如果他给予关爱并真诚对待学生,

他的“作品”将永垂不朽。

Man is one, can you see?


我们是同一海洋里的水滴,

我们是同一海里的波浪,

来加入我们对统一的追求。

生活应当是这样,因为

我们是同一花园的花朵,

我们是同一树上的树叶,

人类是一体的?

Where the vision is eternity, cultivate people.

视野是一年,养花吧。

你是你内在驱动的产物,

Look for the beauty around you--
in nature, in others, in yourself--
and believe in the love of friends, family, and humankind.
You can find love in a smile or a helping hand,
in a thoughtful gesture or a kind word.
It is all around, if you just look for it.

处处留心你身边的美丽:
自然中的美,他人的美,你自己的美。
请相信,美来自朋友、家庭乃至全人类的融融爱意。
一个微笑,一双援助之手,
一个关心的举止,一句友善的话语,无不传达着爱。
如果你有心去寻找,爱无所不在。

There are four mental types

among human beings.


The man who knows,

and is aware that he knows:


he is wise, so inquire of him.


The man who knows,

but is aware that he knows:


remind him and help him that he forget not.


The man who is ignorant,


and knows that he is ignorant : teach him.


The man who is ignorant,

but pretends to know:


he is fool, so keep away from him.


人有四种思维:

有学识之人,并能认识到自己是有学问的:

他是明智的,向这种人请教吧;

有学识但却意识不到自己有学识:

提醒并帮助他,让他不忘记。

无知之人,但有自知之明:帮他一把吧。

愚昧之人,但却不懂装懂:那是一个笨蛋,离他远点。

And in reading

I got to know more about myself.

This is what could clears up.

What appears on the surface

unfolds its depth.

What is feeble gets steeled.
读别人,此过程中我对自己也有了更深的了解,

像这样,从阴转晴,从浅薄到深刻,从软弱到刚强。

How come one person moves

forward with one success after another,

and yet some are still getting ready?

How come one man goes through life crossing

are hurdle after an other,

accomplishing his goals

while another struggles and gets nowhere?

为什么有人勇往直前,成就不断;而有些人却原地踏步,停滞不前?

为什么有人跨越障碍,实现目标;而其他人却挣扎求存,一事无成?

I see me running through that open door.

I can put color in my life.

I can bloom even in thin soil.

I can look back, but I will still move forward.

I can use my brain and my common sense.

I can turn the TV on and off.

I can because I think I can.

我能使生活多彩。

我能在贫瘠的土壤里开花。

我能追忆,但我仍然向前走。

我能用大脑和我的常识。

我能开电视和关电视。

我能,因为我认为我能。
