I didn't know how to cook until I had to. My mother prepared lunch and dinner for me before I went to university. And I don't need to cook at university. The canteen took care of that. After I graduated, I lived at my parents' home. So I didn't need to cook. And I didn't want to learn.
Finally nobody cooked for me, as I moved to another city. I bought food for a few days then gave up. I couldn't afford that. So the only realistic solution would be to cook by myself.
I remember the first thing I cooked was fried egg with tomato, maybe the easiest food for a beginner. I was so excited that I shared it will my neighbor who said it was good, maybe just out of courtesy. As I cooked more, my skills got improved and I now won't starve if nobody cooks for me.
So I know that cooking is not hard, just like many other things. So far as you try, you will learn that.

Because all verbs are past tense, save for don't, please see the following:
I didn't... had to. ... prepared... I went... And I don't need to cook at university. ... took... graduated, I lived... didn't... didn't...
I believe don't ought to be didn't.

I bought food for a few days... is a sentence. ... (I) gave up is another. Then is an adverb but not a conjunction. Hence, the whole sentence should be I bought food for a few days and then gave up.
